On this empty lot stood a house very much like 744. In 1928 it was dedicated as a local library named after Douglas Petit, a self made city leader who had served on Public Library board from 1909 until his death in 1925. The library prospered as one of the most used in the city and early on appeals for a bigger building were made. Beginning in 1952 talk of new building became more serious and the decision to build a new structure on Victoria Place was made in 1959.
