This house, indicated on the 1892 street atlas, is one of the earliest on the street. Much of its Queen Anne style detail work, especially on the porch with its stick style valence, is intact, though in need of repair. This type of decoration became common and inexpensive in the decades after the Civil War as new power lathes allowed the mas production of elaborate turned columns, posts and spindles.
Originally this house may also have had more varied clapboard and some decorative shingles, similar to what can still be seen at 557 Allen Street. It would also have been painted in at least two colors.
