This is one of several similar ample houses in the this stretch of Allen Street that were probably built in the first years of the 20th-century as part James Pennock’s development of the tract. Superficially, the houses vary, but their size, structure and form are mostly the same, consisting of a two-story cubic base with a high third story attic that could be finished as living space. The use of a pediment and columns on the front porch demonstrates the transition of classical forms – which were seen as a new “colonial” revival style. Compare, for example this house with number 470, which has a Gothic style porch and more ornate widow surround, but otherwise is much the same.
