West of Westcott

These two houses are good examples of two-family apartment buildings – called flats – in which spacious upper and lower apartments are almost identical in size and layout. These two buildings were built between 1910 and 1924, and they replace an earlier structure on the double lot that is indicated on a map of 1892 as belonging to H. H. Loomis. Each of these buildings has nearly identical apartments on the first two floors, but unlike #851 Euclid, the asymmetrical porches link these building to the older picturesque tradition and the contemporary the Arts & Crafts movement.

The building of these flats and the other similar densely packed double houses along the north side of Euclid Avenue take advantage of the streetcar; these houses did not have garages. Already by the 1920s the “clang, clang” of the streetcar and other street activity had driven many owner-occupied single family dwellings off of Euclid.
