The Old Neighborhood Part I
Stop #51
542 Columbus Ave
- Built: Before 1892
- Architect: Unknown
Similar to #543 across the street, but remodeled so that most original features are gone. Still, the decorative shingles in the gable and the scroll cut brackets remain. A new double-story side porch is a replacement. Originally, instead of begin made of plain untreated lumber the porch would have been a lively display of the turner’s art – with spindles and rails of many shapes, painted in multiple colors.
This is a good example of how the “vinylizing” of older buildings may provide short-term cost benefits over painting and maintenance but greatly diminishes the visual stimulation that should be part of an urban neighborhood.
