Abdo’s Grocery Store was at this location from 1936 until 2014, when it was sold by the DeLuca family ending the longest continuous business in the Westcott neighborhood.  Founded by an immigrant from Syria, the store filled one third of a 1920s Deco-style addition to an older house located on the corner of South Beech and Avondale.  This type of transformation of residential to commercial use was common throughout Syracuse, especially during the 1920s and the in the Great Depression of the 1930s, when small family business (groceries, candy, newspapers, etc.) helped pay the bills. Though under new ownership and name (Casa de ‘Cuse), the business continues as a small grocery-convenience store.
