The Old Neighborhood Part I
Stop #02
458 Westcott Street
- Built: ca. 1890
- Architect: Unknown
This Queen Anne style house retains its form but has lost many of its original details. Note, however, the original wide and massive front door. The house is typical in its design for the period – with a main rectangular block with a hipped roof that is expanded with front and side polygonal gable-topped window bays. The bays served practical and aesthetic purposes. They drew in more natural light for longer periods of the day and they gave a livelier aesthetic appearance to the house’s exterior form. The low pediment over the porch and the high pediment over the front bay provide an attractive rhythm for the façade.
